The UK has done exceptionally well in the 2012 HERA ‘Cultural Encounters’ call, with nine of the 18 projects to be funded led by UK-based researchers. A further eight involve UK researchers as partners.
A total of 18 countries are involved in the trans-European programme. ‘Cultural Encounters’ is the second Joint Research Programme (JRP) to be organised by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) following the first call in 2009. The Cultural Encounters call attracted nearly 600 applicants to the Call for Outline proposals out of which 89 proposals were selected for the Full Proposal stage.
All projects are funded from a central pot of €18m, which comprises contributions from all partner organisations and funding from the European Commission of €6m. The AHRC’s contribution to the programme, on behalf of the UK, is €3.5m.
Among the research projects being funded by the programme are projects exploring cultural exchange during the First World War, the transnational reception of women’s writing, the international fashion industry from 1945, music migrations in the early modern age and encounters with the Orient in early modern scholarship.
Further information about the funded projects will be available later in the year. The HERA website is available at: http://www.heranet.info/
